Proverbs 14:31 “Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.”
St. Joseph’s Church is now offering a free meal to anyone who is hungry on Thursday evenings. We have partnered with Second Helpings to serve the community around us. Second Helpings is providing the food. St. Joseph’s Church is providing the venue. Parishioners are providing the volunteer power to make it all happen.
Second Helpings is a unique organization whose motto is “Transforming lives through the power of food.” They have arranged to receive food that would otherwise be discarded in order to feed the hungry among us. In addition to that, they offer a culinary job training program in order to help people gain skills in the food service industry. Their mission of feeding the hungry and working to help people provide for themselves, so they aren’t faced with hunger, is a fantastic combination.
St. Joseph Church has a great location with which to provide those in need with food. We have the kitchen, the tables, the seating that make it a perfect site to administer this mission. We also, as always, have plenty of willing and caring volunteers.
This meal will be a weekly event, taking place every Thursday from 6 pm to 7 pm. We can always use extra volunteers to help with set up, serving, and clean-up. This is an excellent opportunity to get your kids involved, as there will be age appropriate opportunities for them to help. If you can lend a hand, please sign-up on the bulletin board in the old narthex of the church.
As a parish, we are very happy for this opportunity to reach out to those in need in the community that surrounds us.
